GRADD News

The Community and Economic Development Department at GRADD assists communities in the development of their county solid waste plans.  GRADD staff works closely with the county solid waste coordinator in the development of the plan to ensure all of the information in the plan is correct.

Solid Waste plans include, at a minimum, a summary of local ordinances related to solid waste, a list of local solid waste transporters, and the landfill where solid waste is deposited.  The plan is also required to include a list of open dumps and a plan to clean up these dumps.

Once developed, these plans are submitted to the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet, Division of Waste Management for approval.  The county solid waste plans are required to be updated every five years.  For more information on Division of Waste Management, visit their website at http://www.waste.ky.gov/programs/sw/default.htm.

Waste Tire Program

GRADD also administers the Waste Tire Program every year on behalf of the Division of Waste Management.  Each year the Division of Waste Management hosts Commonwealth Clean-up Week in March.  During this week, communities are encouraged to clean up open dumps.  If a community retrieves tires from these open dumps, they can be reimbursed for the expenses relating to the disposal of these tires.

When a person purchases new tires for their vehicle, they pay a $1.00 fee for the disposal of each old tire.  These funds are then used to reimburse communities for the disposal of tires found in open dumps they cleanup during the Commonwealth Clean-up Week.
