The purpose of the OJT Program is to assist a WIA client to learn a job skill or qualify for a specific occupation through demonstration and practice. The Training program is developed with either private for profit, public or private non-profit employers. The employer agrees to hire and train the WIA client, with the intention of retaining them as a regular employee after the completion of the training. the employer is reimbursed up to 50% of the actual wages paid to the WIA client for a specific training period.
The OJT employer must ensure that WIA clients are provided a structured training opportunity in which to gain the knowledge and competencies necessary to be successful in the occupation in which they receive training. OJT contracts must identify the occupation, the skills to be learned, and the length of time the training will be provided.
OJT is a training option meant to be conducted in the highest skill occupations appropriate for the WIA client. It is not subsidized employment for low-skill occupations that need very little training time. OJT is only appropriate for the length of time necessary for the WIA client to be trained in the specific occupation, but not to exceed six (6) months.
